This special issue was prepared by a multinational team of experienced facilitators and simulation professionals consisting of Elyssebeth Leigh, Elizabeth Tipton, Elena Likhacheva, Marieke de Wijse-van Heeswijk and Birgit Zürn. Our decision to edit a special issue on facilitation emerged from discussions about the complexities of effective facilitation which evolved across several ISAGA Summer Schools and conference workshops. Those discussions highlighted the fact that facilitation skills are: - An underexposed research subject - Being examined by few authors - Not yet subject to ‘thick descriptions’ identifying what is involved - Subject to few case study-based examples of facilitation in practice - Not well understood as a complex task - In need of close and extended observation to (for example) identify what really happens, suggest relevant improvements and assure quality performance.
