The idea to host a conference in Russia in 2010 stems from three previous conferences. The first international conference in 2007 entitled “Globalization and Landscape Architecture (GaLA): issues for education and practice” was an immense success. The 2008 conference addressed different international aspects of urban design and ecology and was dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the first Russian landscape architecture program, which was introduced at the Saint-Petersburg Forest Technical Academy in 1933. The 2009 conference was addressed historical landscapes in the modern era. The success of these three conferences inspired The SaintPetersburg State Forest Technical Academy, the Administration of Saint-Petersburg and Lincoln University in New Zealand, together with the International Federation of Landscape Architects to provide support for a fourth international conference dedicated to the theme of contemporary landscape design. The conference aims are to share experiences of understanding contemporary deign trends in modern cities in the era of globalisation, their meaning and importance for the identity of cities. The conference focus is reinforced by the widely international conference participants, who come from Russia, Sweden, Italy, New Zealand, USA, Brazil, Malaysia, France, Canada, Turkey, Estonia, Iran, Slovakia, Japan, Latvia, Venezuela, Austria, and The Netherlands
