TheV meeting «Early Events in Human Pathologies» held in Listvyanka, Baikal on July 9–12, 2012 will unite Russian, Ukrainian, Armenian, and French scientists working on cancer, neurodegenerative and autoimmune diseases. This is the fourth meeting in this very successful series, the previous meetings were held in Moscow, Russian Federation (2007), Kiev, Ukraine (2009), Barbizon, France (2010) and Erevan, Armenia (2011). The challenges of modern medicine include a variety of diseases with a slow onset, where a success of treatment depends on early diagnostics, which in its turn relies on the knowledge of early mechanisms of disease. These diseases include cancer, neurodegenerative and autoimmune diseases. They also represent a challenge to modern society, as their treatment is a heavy financial burden on public health systems. Therefore, the understanding of early mechanisms of these diseases is particularly important for the success of treatment and for development of new drugs. Some of the early mechanisms of cancer, autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases are similar, eg mutations and translocations in immunoglobulin genes may provoke both autoimmune diseases and cancer. Therefore, cooperation between laboratories working on these subjects may provide new insights into early mechanisms of these diseases. The quality of the meeting and the collaborations born from the previous meetings are reflected in the articles and the abstracts, published in issue of «Biopolymers and Cell». We would like to thank the local organizing committee, Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences, Prof. Olga Lavrik and Dr. Nataliya Lebedeva for the wonderful organization of the meeting, and the «Biopolymers and Cell» journal for their support.
