Cities and regions are currently faced with challenges of external uncertainty and turbulence. Factors contributing to this include global demographic and migration trends; macroeconomic instability; new technological challenges; political upheavals and digitalization processes. Faced with disruption of this scale it is critical to rethink our perception regarding the most relevant forms and methods of spatial policy. Choices of effective models for spatial development will vary by country (developed, developing, emerging) and for different types of regions and cities (industrial, rural and post-industrial regions, small towns, big cities and city-regions, metropolitan areas, etc). This workshop will consider: appropriate methods of spatial policies and adaptation to new and changing external environments; new drivers and sources of sustainable spatial development. The workshop discussion is divided into three themes: New economic realities for cities and regions. What are the challenges and threats for spatial development? Particular attention will be given to digitalization processes, their impact on the development of cities and regions, and how different types of regions and cities can adapt to these new economic conditions. The analysis of development trends as regions and cities adapt to uncertainty. This strand will focus on issues of spatial differentiation of socio-economic development, including, but not restricted to, those in the areas of financial security, employment, migration, and demographic dynamics. The search for strong models of spatial policy, funding for and implementation of change Papers are invited, but not restricted to, the following themes: Spatial development and resilience New challenges and pressures for spatial development Concepts, theories, methods for understanding spatial development Macroeconomic processes and global trends: spatial projections The role of planning, governance and devolution in uncertain times Spatial policy and digitalization Smart governance for smart regions and cities Local and Regional Policies for the New Economy Spatial impacts of global investment flows, Global Value Chains & connectivity Industry 4.0 and the future shape of innovation, industrial development and strategy New forms of industrial development and policy including competitiveness of industrial regions & cities Spatial policy in post-soviet countries: old legacies and new challenges City and region building governance and institutions The role of universities in shaping places and futures New financial instruments for growing cities and regions Development policies and cooperation in Arctic zone Diversity and inequality at local and regional levels Shrinking cities and resilience
