  This conference is part of a long tradition. The first ICOP took place in 1963, more than 50 years ago and 20 years before the IPA itself was founded. The early ICOPs were important opportunities to directly transfer knowledge between pioneering researchers in the East and the West. The more recent conferences, held as interest in permafrost grew dramatically, allowed participants to share their results and update their understanding of what is now a broad field within earth system science and engineering. This is the first time an ICOP has been held in Germany. The numbers of abstracts submitted and confirmed registrations have already shown that it will be one of the largest. Over the past few months, I have observed first-hand the efforts of Professor Dr. Hans Hubberten and his colleagues on the Local Organizing Committee to also make it the best conference to date. The IPA is very grateful to all the members of the LOC for their commitment and energies in preparing a meeting that all of us will enjoy.
