The Sixth International Conference on Diffusion in Materials, was held on July 18-23, 2004 in Cracow, under the Patronage of the AGH University of Science and Technology, the Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Cracow University of Technology. Diffusion continues to pose fundamental problems in the area of pure science, and also has strong links with modern technology. Its importance reaches into widespread areas of our knowledge: from nanotechnology and physical chemistry, to biology, medicine and geophysics. Hence, any conclusions drawn anywhere within the vast framework of diffusion, are likely to have value to the field as a whole. In view of the huge amount of research done, it is surprising how rough-and-ready are the models developed for technological processes. A classic example of this tendency is the negligence of stresses and of flux coupling terms in the phenomenological equations.
