  Virtueller Vortrag Prof. Dr Rustam Shukurov Die Corona-Situation hat uns allen in den letzten Monaten vieles an Um- und Neu-Denken abverlangt, aber wir sind zuversichtlich, dass wir bis zum Jahresende 2021 die bewährten Traditionen unserer Zusammenkünfte wieder aufnehmen können, und sich vielleicht aus den Erfahrungen der letzten Zeit auch neue Möglichkeiten ergeben. In diesem Sinne sind Sie sehr herzlich eingeladen zu unserem nächsten Vortrag, der diesmal in digitaler Form, auf der Plattform Zoom, stattfinden wird. Montag, 18. Jänner 2021, 18.30 Uhr Professor Dr. Rustam Shukurov, Moscow State University and Austrian Academy of Sciences Byzantium and Asia: an attempt at reconceptualization Thanks to the contribution of many generations of scholars, Byzantium is now considered as one of the major pivots of Western Medieval civilization. Yet, Archaic and Classical Antiquity, as well as the Hellenistic and Roman epochs absorbed a great deal of “Asian” traditions, which established an indissoluble bond between Byzantium and the Perso-Semitic East and Scythian North. The Byzantines accumulated in themselves much of the “Asian” in modern sense of the term. My aim in this paper is to outline and to reappraise those multifaceted connections that continued to link Medieval Hellenism with the Persian, Arabic, and Turkic East.
