Welcome to the 14th International Circumpolar Remote Sensing Symposium (ICRSS). The ICRSS was first held in Yellowknife, Canada in 1990 and since then it has alternated between North America and Europe on a biennial basis. It grew from the often-expressed need for exchange of information among those in governments, universities, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector interested with remote sensing research and applications in the polar environments. The symposium provides a forum for the exchange of current applied international research, the presentation of new technology, and the advancement of national and international cooperation in the circumpolar regions of the world. The theme of the 14th ICRSS symposium in Homer, Alaska, is Remote Sensing applications for addressing emerging research questions and management needs in polar regions. This symposium is unique in that it deals specifically with remote sensing applications in Arctic and Antarctic environments and how the broad suite of remotely sensed information and remote sensing techniques can provide much needed information for rapidly changing polar regions. Unique to the 14th ICRSS will be a day long special session on remote sensing of permafrost regions. Abstracts are being requested that directly address this topic in the polar regions as well as techniques applied to boreal permafrost regions that are applicable to the Arctic and Antarctic. Other conference topics are listed below and other Special Session requests will be considered. Environmental monitoring Wildlife management and habitat protection Arctic vegetation Land and water management Land cover and land use change Snow and ice, glaciers Climatology Oceanography Geology, mineral, and oil and gas exploration LiDAR/Radar Imaging Hyperspectral remote sensing Ground, Airborne and Satellite imaging (including Unmanned Aerial Systems) Archaeology Data Integration and Data Modeling Geographic Information System and Web based portals Boreal processes that have direct influence on Arctic processes This symposium will be of interest to scientists, scholars, and industry and government professionals involved in renewable and non-renewable resource management in both polar environments. The symposium will provide a forum for the exchange of current applied international research, the presentation of new technology, and the advancement of internal co-operation in the circumpolar regions of the world.
