The multidimensional Islamic worldview has developed the idea of coexistence and co-habitation of jinn and men who share the living space together. The nature of this relationship may be approached through the notion of neighborhood, which is reflected in both the textual culture and vernacular beliefs and practices. For instance, the motive of the Creation gives an insight into the neighboring relationships between jinn and humans from the very beginning of the world, as well as the concept of destinies underscores that jinn and humans are linked in this life because the Divine message is addressed to both of them. The two species, hence, have the freedom of choice. The idea of the vicinity of jinn and men underlies various Muslim beliefs, and it is this idea of neighborhood between the two species that oftentimes determine the everyday practices of Muslim believers. The coexistence of jinn and men seems to be predestined and therefore bounded to a curtain extent – the world of humans is open for the spirits, but these spatial relations are not mutually equal. However, the boundaries between jinn and humans are blurred and pliable, particularly when both try to manipulate with their power and push the limits. This interdisciplinary workshop aims at conceptualizing the spatial relations and various modes of neighborhood affinity between jinn and men in Muslim beliefs. We are interested in discussing how the Islamic tradition(s) shape the boundary zones between the two species and how these boundaries are manifested in different forms and contexts.
