The conference brought together 463 participants from 61 countries, including researchers, students, government officials, and representatives of NGOs and private companies. The conference was co-hosted by the University of Adelaide and the Consortium for the Barcode of life, and sponsored by several other leading initiatives and groups. The University of Adelaide's picturesque campus provided an outstanding venue for plenary presentations in Elder Hall, exhibits and poster displays in Bonython Hall, and technical sessions in nearby classroom buildings. The beautiful outdoor areas on campus were welcoming spaces for informal discussions outside of the sessions. The four days of the conference and two days of preconference training sessions gave participants an in-depth exposure to the latest capabilities and uses of DNA barcoding. The conference gave all the participants the opportunity to discuss the directions that barcode research and development should take in the next 5-10 years.
