  42nd AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials Conference 16-19 April 2001 Sheraton Seattle Hotel & Towers Seattle, WA Abstract Deadline Extended: 21 August 2000 Call for Papers SDM: Innovative Materials Solutions for the Next Century The 42nd Structures, Structural Dynamics, and Materials (SDM) Conference is sponsored by AIAA, ASME, ASCE, AHS, and ASC. This established conference is a widely acknowledged annual event that provides a unique forum dedicated to the latest developments in the collective disciplines of structures, structural dynamics, materials, design engineering, and multidisciplinary design optimization. Keynote and special lectures will focus on the role materials will play in aerospace product and performance enhancements for the 21st century. Structures This area encompasses mechanics of metallic and nonmetallic components obeying elastic and inelastic constitutive laws; thermal response; structural stability and postbuckling behavior; computational structural mechanics; nondeterministic methods, probabilistic design, and uncertainty analysis; weight, reliability, and design cycle cost tradeoffs; structural integrity; durability and damage tolerance; damage detection, structural health monitoring, and novel repair concepts; advanced applications; development; verification, validation, and qualification; knowledge-based engineering; and simulation-based design. Papers emphasizing coupling among computational, analytical, and experimental methods, coupling of design and manufacturing to enhance affordability, and techniques for design/analysis cycle time reduction are particularly encouraged. Structural Dynamics This area covers experimental, analytical, and computational methods for determining the response of structures to dynamic environments encompassing damped, nonlinear, and forced vibrations and transient and steady-state response to excitations due to gusts, acoustics, impact, shock, and operational loads. Papers on active and passive approaches to vibration suppression, aeroelasticity, and fluid-structure interactions in fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft, spacecraft, and hypersonic vehicles with transient thermally induced dynamic loads are solicited. Materials This area includes structural, adaptive, and affordable materials. Areas of focus include material development, mechanics, characterization, coatings and protection, optimization, tradeoff studies, life-cycle costs, affordability, inspection, repair, maintenance, and environmental impacts. Experimental and analytical methods that demonstrate thermomechanical properties, fatigue and fracture, strain-rate dependent behavior, durability, damage tolerance, longevity, time-dependent behavior, and in-service performance are included. Discussions of applications of materials to primary structures are encouraged, with particular emphasis on the introduction of new materials, including high temperature materials and metal matrix composites, and new material forms, such as woven, braided, and N-dimensional composites. Development, characterization, and evaluation of affordable advanced materials for aerospace and nonaerospace applications will be of special interest. Design Engineering Papers on innovative, novel, or otherwise remarkable designs or concepts resulting in a product that effectively satisfied its need or requirement are desired. The definition, application, and implementation of emerging design tools and processes for new product design and product redesign that accomplish "cheaper, faster, better" as applied to prototype and production efforts for structures, systems, and components should be emphasized. Discussion of use of design tools for structural optimization or rapid synthesis and analysis, such as knowledge-based systems and simulations, is also encouraged. Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) This area focuses on optimizing the performance and reducing the costs of complex systems involving multiple interacting disciplines, such as those found in aircraft, spacecraft, automobiles, and industrial manufacturing equipment, etc., and on the development of related methodologies. MDO is a broad area that encompasses design synthesis, sensitivity analysis, approximation concepts, optimization methods and strategies, artificial intelligence, rule-based design, parametric programming, and feature-based design technologies- all in the context of integrated design dealing with multiple disciplines and/or subsystem interactions. Contributions limited to in single discipline optimization are welcomed, provided they enhance and support multidisciplinary applications. Questions about the abstracts themselves or manual abstract submissions should be referred to the Technical Program Chair. Selection of papers and/or presentations for all areas and sessions will be based upon abstracts of no less than 1,000 words with key figures and references to pertinent publication in the existing literature. In the abstracts, authors must clearly identify new or significant aspects of their work. Abstracts will be due no later than 7 August 2000. Authors will be notified of paper acceptance by 13 November 2000. An Author's Kit, containing detailed instructions and guidelines for submitting papers to AIAA, will be made available to authors of accepted papers. Authors of accepted papers must provide a complete manuscript to AIAA by 5 February 2001, for inclusion in the at-conference proceedings and for the right to present at the conference. It is the responsibility of those authors whose papers or presentations are accepted to ensure that a representative attends the conference to present the paper. Abstracts submitted for the special session must also be submitted by 7 August 2000 to the Technical Program Chair for inclusion in the normal paper selection process. Work-in-Progress Sessions The Work-in-Progress sessions will provide a forum for the presentation of ongoing work. The presentations, which will be limited to 15 minutes, should clearly state the problem, progress, difficulties experienced, results, and sponsors. Participation in these sessions does not preclude submittal of a paper and/or publication of work. Details of the solicitation and selection of student participants for the conference will be sent to the faculty advisors of the participating host societies' student branches. The student papers will be presented during regular sessions and will be suitably recognized. A limited number of students will receive recognition for their papers at the SDM conference awards luncheon through the Jefferson Goblet Award. Jefferson Goblet awardees will be selected on the basis of paper quality and the effectiveness of the students' presentations. Papers not presented by the student(s) will not qualify for the award. Authors will be required to sign a statement to this effect. A general "no paper, no podium" policy will be in effect for contributed and invited papers. This policy means that an author will not be allowed to speak if a written paper has not been prepared and if preprints are not available to attendees at the conference. Videotaped presentations will not be allowed. Submittal of an abstract is interpreted as an intention to attend the conference and to present the final paper. Warning-Technology Transfer Considerations Prospective authors are reminded that technology transfer guidelines have extended considerably the time required for review of abstracts and completed papers by U.S. government agencies. Internal (company) plus external (government) reviews can consume 16 weeks or more. Government review, if required, is the responsibility of the author. Authors should determine the extent of approval necessary early in the paper preparation process to preclude paper withdrawals and late paper submittal. The committee and AIAA will assume that all abstracts, papers, and presentations are appropriately cleared.
