Topical question of the modern medicine and biology is the body protection from the environmental pollutions in metropolis and industrial area. Low doses of toxic substances can in short time induce damage and dysregulation of functional systems of organism. The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of non-medicamentous prevention of toxicant-induced damage and search the possibilities to stimulate detoxification capabilities by new method of the adaptation to hypoxia and hyperoxia (AHH). Biotransformation of xenobiotics takes place in liver microsomal system of oxidation, which is accompanied by reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation. AHH is capable of increase non-specific resistance of the body including protection against ROS. We used the rat model of intoxication by potassium bichromate and benzene. Adaptation treatment consists of breathing with hypoxia and hyperoxia air - O2: 10% 5 min, 30% 3 min; 1 h daily, 8 days. We investigated the effect of intoxication with benzene and bichromate on physical endurance, behavior parameters, the intensity of oxidation processes, the activity of antioxidant enzymes and level of heat shock proteins on male Wistar rats. Toxicants induce decrease endurance of animals, activation of free radical oxidation and increase of urgent response proteins. Short-term AHH conducting simultaneously with toxicants administration, compensated damages, lower intensity of ROS-dependent processes, restored pro- and antioxidants balance in liver and heart. In skeletal muscle even short-term AHH decrease level of constitutive and inducible HSP simultaneously with increase of physical load resistance. Besides AHH in combination with toxicants supports locomotory orientating activity on the level of control and prevent the increase of anxiety behavior. Consequently short-term AHH prevents stressor component of toxicants action: increase physical load and resistance of membrane structures to free radical oxidation, normalize ROS-inducible and constitutive proteins, decrease stressory element of behavior.
