Implicit theories of personality and intelligence and goal orientations are the part of the complex system of personality predictors of academic achievement. The goal of our cross-cultural study was to compare the relationships between these variables and tolerance/intolerance for uncertainty and academic achievement in Russian and Azerbaidzhan students. We established the cross-cultural invariance of the factorial structure of Implicit Theories Inventory among Russian and Azerbaidzhan samples. 265 Azerbaidhzan students and 359 Russian students participated in the main study. Azerbaidzhan students showed higher levels of performance (compared to mastery) goals, compared to Russian students. They also showed higher levels of belief that intelligence is malleable and develops in learning contexts. At the same time, Russian students had significantly higher tolerance and significantly lower intolerance for uncertainty, when compared to Azerbaidzhan students. However these group differences could potentially be attributed to cross-cultural differences in intolerance foe uncertainty in men, but not women.
