Researches in the field of ecology, geo-ecology and nature management are characterized by high demand in Russia and Japan. It would seem that it is quite natural in these conditions should be a high degree of cooperation between scientists and experts in both countries. However, until recently, the situation was exactly the opposite. Moreover, historically, the activities and achievements of its neighbors on the planet we rather guessed than known. And it's clearly not in the interests of science and environmental management practices of both our countries. The first contacts of colleagues from the University of Tokyo and Moscow State University demonstrated an understanding of the need to build relations of interaction and cooperation in all promising directions. But what is this trend? To answer this question it is necessary to have an objective view on academic potential partner. The parties were aware that the submission form - it is not easy and fast. The first step in this direction was to be scheduled for autumn 2013 seminar. Seminar has clarified priorities of the sides. For Russians, innovative urboekological technologies are the most attractive as well as everything connected with geo-ecological bases of "green" economy. Japanese colleagues, seems to be particularly interested in our educational techniques and related issues. There are many another promising fields of mutual interest, for example, all linked to the preservation of our common natural and cultural heritage. Now it’s a time of the second step. Our universities are these of who are responsible for sustainable future in our countries and beyond of them, for future we wish where sustainable environment plays a crucial role. On this basis, the paper examines preconditions, potential and subject fields of cooperation of the leading universities of Russia and Japan for sustainable environment. Paper states and demonstrates that future belongs to those who understand that the key to sustainable environment in our time is becoming a factor of sustainable partnership of professionals.
