The side event will provide an overview of the issue of land abandonment in the Pan-European context. The lack of consistent measurement across the European region means the current extent of farmland abandonment (FLA) is not well known even for the EU. According to Alcantara et al. [2013] by 2005 in Central and Eastern Europe and the Balkan 52.5 million ha was abandoned including 32 million ha in European Russia. Thus about 60% of abandoned lands are found in the European part of Russia. According to FAO, the use of arable lands in Russia, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan together dropped from 200 million hectares in 1991 to 177 million in 2003 or by 12% but these numbers may be underestimated. Russian statistics for cultivated areas and remote sensing data suggest the abandoned cropland area in Russia alone have constituted up to 40 million hectares, significantly more than reported by FAO land resources statistics.
