In this work, we explore hypothesis that neuronal resting state brain activity (RSA) replays previously acquired memories. To test this, we use c-Fos imaging of a mouse brain RSA and relate it to animal’s previous experience prelabeled by c-Fos mediated Cre-recombination. First, we characterized c-Fos RSA of 104 brain areas and analyzed their functional connectivity showing that mouse c-Fos RSA form a scale free network with local clusters. Importantly, activity of areas related to threat learning and memory was highly variable in this RSA. This variability is employed to examine an overlap of c-Fos RSA 3 days following learning to a neuronal network labeled in the same animal at the time of memory acquisition.
