Modern ion chromatography (IC) requires highly selective and efficient stationary phases to solve particular analytical tasks on determining inorganic and small organic ions in various complex samples. Organic polymers such as polystyrene-divinylbenzene (PS-DVB) with high crosslinking degree, which can be used as stationary phases for reversed phase HPLC (RP HPLC), are considered the best substrates for preparing anion exchangers for suppressed IC. Chromatographic properties of the anion exchangers are known to depend not only on their surface chemistry (i.e. the structure of functional layer and the way of its immobilization), but also on the characteristics of PS-DVB beads, namely, average particle size, specific surface area, pore diameter and volume, copolymer crosslinking degree. There are not many literature data devoted to these aspects; therefore our research was aimed at the investigation of correlation between morphology of PS-DVB particles, their chromatographic performance in RP HPLC and in IC after their chemical derivatization.
