In the present work, the photochromic properties of spiropyran modified with long alkyl chain (SP1) and its derivative possessing negative photochromism (SP2) are studied in solutions and at the air/water interface. It’s established that these compounds retain optical activity upon transition from solution into planar two-dimensional state. Reversible changes of monolayer surface pressure under UV-light and in the dark are detected. The kinetics of SP1 and SP2 phototransformations is investigated and it’s shown that the rate of photoreaction of spiropyrans in monolayers is one order slower than in solutions.
