Oxygenic photosynthesis is one of the most important processes of the conversion of solar energy into biochemical energy. It is a complicated process, which includes an electron transfer reaction in the thylakoid membrane as a crucial step. Electron transfer chain (ETC) consists of electron transfer cofactors (mainly chlorophylls, quinones and iron-sulfur clusters), which are anchored by small soluble and multisubunit transmembrane proteins. Position of a cofactor in the ETC depends on the cofactor midpoint potential, which also is affected by interaction with the protein. Replacing the cofactor with other molecule possessing similar chemical structure, but with a different midpoint potential, might lead to some changes of the electron transfer kinetics.
