The Chinese idiom is the crystallization of the accumulation and precipitation of Chinese civilization, which is an important part of Chinese vocabulary. Using concise language to express profound connotation, idiom is the essence of language, which greatly enriched the language of Han nationality. With the development of the times, society and the growth of people's needs, the publication and circulation of Chinese idiom dictionary are increasing, dictionaries also come in many different forms and contents. This paper mainly defines the scope of Chinese idioms on the basis of previous studies from the perspective of the compilation of dictionaries. On this basis, the collected Chinese idiom dictionaries are classified from three different perspectives: the number of words collected by the dictionary, the reader object of the dictionary and the functional use of the dictionary, and then it has been carried out a series of specific explanations on the compilation process of the idiom dictionary, so as the reasons and characteristics of the various development stages of Chinese idiom dictionary compilation.
