High-temperature radiolysis is considered as a means for diversifying the ways of handling polymer waste, including plastic and lignocellulose. The principles of radiation oxidation of macromolecules can serve as the basis for creating a method for accelerated testing of the degradability of plastics. Radiolysis combined with dry distillation is capable of enhancing the conversion of waste plastics of petroleum origin into valuable low molecular weight products. Phenolic products of high-temperature decomposition of lignin-containing waste can inhibit back polymerization in secondary monomers generated via thermal depolymerization of plastic waste. For its part, high-temperature electron-beam processing of cellulose waste can generate an unprecedentedly high yield of furans, which are demanded for the synthesis of "green" plastics.
