Thermally expanded graphite in form of molded rings is a traditional solution for gland sealing grace to elasticity and the high thermal conductivity Graphite rings ensure effective heat dissipation from the contact with the shaft, low friction coefficient against steel: <0.12 on a dry surface and <0.03 in the presence of the liquid, good fatigue characteristics and resistance to thermal cycling. Seals based on expanded graphite are widely used in machines for sealing of valves, pumps, for either rotational or reciprocating motion, if operation is carried out at high operating temperatures and high pressure. Excellent compressibility of the material ensures high tightness of the connection. It should also be noted a low corrosive activity and high chemical resistance of graphite seals for almost all media except strong oxidants.
