One of the relevant tasks of electronics and optoelectronics is the creation of flexible film semiconductor materials. Composite polymer materials using polyethylene (PE) and polyaniline (PANI) are promising in this direction. One of the methods of such materials creating is the synthesis of PANI on the surface of PE films. In this case, the surface layer of the PANI is associated with PE by weak adhesive interactions and is unstable to mechanical stress. In this work, a method for modifying the surface and volume of the PE film for chemical binding of the PANI was developed. In this method, the PE film was exposed to radiation grafting polymerization of styrene followed by sulfonation of grafted polystyrene chains. The degree of sulfation of polystyrene was varied from 0.44 to 1.72 equiv. of SO3H groups per mole of polystyrene links. Oxidative polymerization of aniline in the presence of ammonium persulfate (APS) as an oxidizer was carried out on films modified by this way. The effect of thickness distribution of sulfonic acid groups, their concentration in the film and the ratio of aniline and APS concentrations on aniline polymerization was studied. The optimal conditions to obtain homogeneous films are chosen. The films were tested as an optical sensors to detect NH3. It is shown that the response time varies from 1 to 20 seconds and depends on the partial pressure of ammonia vapor and the composition of the composite material.
