Botanic garden of the Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU) is the oldest in Russia. The Garden has been founded by tsar Peter the Great in 1706 г as a pharmaceutical kitchen garden. In 1805 at the request of well-known German botanist G.F.Gofman, who was in 1804 invited to organize the department of botany at the MSU, this «pharmaceutical kitchen garden» which at that time belonged to the Medical Academy has been bought by the MSU. Thus, in 100 years after its foundation the Garden became the part of the MSU, and education became one of its main missions. It remained the educational base for students throughout 150 years. In the middle of the XX-th century, along with the construction of the new campus of the MSU the Garden got the new territory. Now the Garden settles down in 2 territories. The first (historical) territory houses the unique collection of tropical and subtropical plants which has been collected for 200 years. This territory has mainly educational value: here study the members of the Young ecologist Club, workshops on professional development for school teachers of biology and ecological events for children are arranged. The main (new) territory has important scientific and thematic collections of the open ground. At the present time the Garden is the base on which scientists and students of different faculties can conduct studies and scientific researches. The Garden together with the professors of the biological and soil science faculties carries out programs of professional skills improvement and professional retraining.
