Here we show that trehalose has no effect on the kinetics of S1S2 transition (transfer of an electron from Mn to YZ•), while it accelerates the kinetics of the electrogenic proton transport during S2→S3, and S4→S0 transitions of the WOC induced by the 1st, 2nd and 3rd laser flashes, respectively in dark-adapted PS II samples. A similar increase in the rate of oxygen evolution under steady-state conditions of PS II complexes in solution and proteoliposomes along with electrometrical data in the presence of trehalose enabled us to conclude that the observed phenomenon is caused mainly due to disaccharide interaction with the protein surface at the water oxidizing side. Trehalose interaction with PS II is discussed.
