Oligogermanes may be regarded as models for producing molecular wires. In fact, electrons of single Ge-Ge bond are delocalized across the entire backbone of these molecules. Therefore existence of σ-delocalization in oligogermanes results to appearance of properties similar to unsaturated hydrocarbons (conductivity, thermochromism, luminescence). In the course of this work the number of oligogermanes and related compounds with various substituents were synthesized and investigated (UV/visible spectroscopy, emission spectroscopy, electrochemistry, X-ray analysis).
