Different regions of a face are more or less informative for facial expression decoding. It was shown that anger, fear, and sadness are more readily recognized from the top half of the face, whereas happiness and disgust are more recognizable from the bottom half (Calder et al., 2000). The results of some eye-tracking studies are in good agreement with those data (Schurgin et al., 2014). At the same time the phenomenon of inverted face, negative, and misalined faces demonstrated an importance of holistic processing in face perception (Maurer et al., 2002). It was also shown that eye-movement patterns across a face, refl ected a patterns of attention, more likely differed between participants than between emotional expressions posed by the models (Barabanschikov et al., 2009). Looking at human face a person mostly look on the eyes region. Does eye region particularly informative for decoding of basic emotions? Would artifi cial modifi cation of the eyes region on the photo displaying one of basic emotions (namely pasting the eyes with neutral expression) be crucial for emotion recognition? Could a person identify emotion basing only on eye region information? Would eye movement pattern during facial expression recognition change in comparison with perception of non-modified images? The results of our experiments show that: Specific expression of eyes region is indispensable only for decoding of fear emotion. But eyes confi guration is not crucial for the recognition of other basic emotions. Modification of eyes region on the neutral face leads to recognition of some secondary emotions such as “concentration”, “contempt”, “distrust” et al. So, variations in eyes confi guration change the expression of the face as a whole. Eye-movements parameters differ between different types of stimuli. Thus the eye-movements pattern looks to be driven by the properties of the emotional face.
