We present a new class of thermally stable perfluorocycloalkylidene derivatives of fullerenes, in which perfluorinated alkylidene groups are attached to fullerene cages. Like well known perfluoroalkyl derivatives of fullerenes, the new compounds are characterized by high structural diversity, thermal stability and electron affinity indicating their potential use as valuable materials. The addition reactions of biradicals, CnF2n (n = 2, 3 4), thermally generated from 1,2-C2F4I2 or 1,4-C4F8I2 were applied to functionalize C60 and C70 fullerenes. The mixtures of C60/70(C2F4)m and C60/70(C4F8)m products were separated by HPLC resulting in a large number of individual compounds. The new compounds were characterized by MALDI mass spectrometry. Molecular structures of ca. twenty perfluorocycloalkylidene derivatives of C60 and C70 with m ranging from 1 to 6 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction and discussed in terms of their addition patterns and relative energies of their formation.
