The combination of pyrolysis and radiolysis can serve as a promising tool for large-scale recycling of spent polymers. Since pyrolysis plants have a high productivity, incorporated radiolysis must be carried out by powerful irradiators, such as electron accelerators. Accordingly, one of the most important tasks is the creation of powerful DC accelerators adapted to high-temperature processes. Desired DC accelerators should generate an electron beam with 2-5 MeV energy of and up to 350 mA beam current, provided that the beam window is heat-resistant. The realistic prime cost of the radiation contribution to the pyrolysis of spent plastic can be less than $ 0.01 per kilogram at a dose of up to 150 kGy. Based on the modern development of accelerators, the achievable annual output of the final product from the radiation unit can reach 700 thousand tons.
