The paper scrutinizes the complicated dynamics of EU–Turkey relations. By the end of 2020 EU–Turkey relations had entered a phase that is often referred as appeasement but that could also be depicted as an extremely fragile truce. The proponents of adversarial policies momentarily concurred that it was not the right time to enter full-fledged confrontation, but that does not mean their mutual perceptions have significantly improved. If the factors that have prevented the conflict from spiralling wane or are neutralised by other forces, confrontation will again become a possible and dangerous scenario. The Eastern Mediterranean is likely to be the space where this tension will first resurface.
