The electrochemical deposition of lanthanide - transition metal (Ln-TM) alloys has gained significant attention, as these materials have excellent magnetic, optical, and electrical properties. A few recent studies have demonstrated the electrochemical formation of Ln-TM deposits in ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents. The electroreduction of TM (having a more positive standard electrochemical potential than lanthanides) has been shown to lead to induced codeposition of Ln shifting its deposition potential to less negative values. This fact greatly facilitates the task, since the deposition of pure Ln requires a thorough search for a suitable ionic system that satisfies many conditions: the solubility of the initial Ln salt, the electrochemical stability of the solvent at high negative potentials, the acceptable viscosity of the solution. Nevertheless, this phenomenon is studied scarcely and the codeposition mechanism is unclear. Here, we study the codeposition of Nd-Fe from 1-butyl-1-methylpyrrolidinium dicyanamide IL, [BMP][DCA] in the presence of controlled amounts of water.
