The introduction of thermally conductive frames into pelletized catalysts of exothermal reactions affects in the most positive way the properties. This paper gives an introduction into a family of catalysts with frames based on nanostructured components such as advanced carbons. Unlike traditional carbons, the advanced forms like exfoliated graphite or carbon nanotubes allow combination of extended surface with high thermal conductivity. An open-ended system of slit-type pores is revealed by X-ray tomography. Testing in exothermal Fischer–Tropsch synthesis shows a favourable influence of the frame, i.e. such catalyst shows productivity of 650 g/kg/h at GHSV of 3000 h-1.
