The breakdown of the molecular chain, consisting in the cleavage of phenolic fragments, is the main radiolytic transformation of lignin at high temperatures. Radiation stimulation of pyrogenic decomposition of lignin makes it possible to obtain a high yield of enriched phenolic tar, which differs in composition from the product formed during traditional dry distillation. The electron beam is a convenient tool for the simultaneous and uniform degradation of lignin. The radiolytic product is a concentrate of methoxyphenols and diatomic substituted phenols. As a consequence, such tar can serve as a convenient and affordable additive for effectively inhibiting styrene thermopolymerization. In addition, the inhibitory effect of the tar is higher than that of synthetic phenolic inhibitors. In the presence of 0.025 wt. % of tar, the induction period of styrene thermopolymerization at 120С is at least 120 minutes. Radiation-thermal formation of phenolic tar occurs by a chain mechanism and, thus, is a highly efficient process.
