Ferrocene compounds containing a heterocyclic moiety are of great interest. Their use for biomedical purposes is related, to a great extent, to a series of unique properties: stability in aqueous media, lipophilicity and the ability to penetrate through cell membranes, redox activity, capability of interacting in cells (intercalation, formation of ionic and covalent bonds), and low toxicity, which is extremely important to consider when choosing anticancer drugs. Sonodynamic therapy (SDT) is one of the promising methods of cancer, inflammatory or infection treatment based on preferential uptake and/or retention of a sonosensitizing drug (sonosensitizer) in diseased tissues and subsequent activation of the drug by ultrasound irradiation. At this date the mostly used sonosensitizers are porphyrins or phthalocyanines. Modification of porphyrins by ferrocene gives rise to systems with unique properties. Thereby in our work we synthesized a ferrocenylheterocyclic porphyrins and their sonodynamic activity was first studied.
