The process of urbanization is hypothesized to be a new source of selection on the life beings dwelling human-transformed habitats. To test this idea we have chosen two insect species: black garden ant Lasius niger (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and common house mosquito Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae). Populations of these species from the urban and natural habitat in the same region were sequenced and compared to find the signatures of selection acting on these insects in urban environment. Ant samples are from Moscow region (Russia), and mosquitoes ? from Moscow and Tula region (Russia). Urban samples came from Moscow which is a great megapolis, and from the small industrial town Aleksin (in Tula region) which is less urbanized than Moscow. The natural populations for the comparison were sampled in the rural areas near these cities. The results of the sequencing and theur bioinformatic analysis is upcoming this summer.
