Three thermoplastic polyimides Siltem STM-1700, Ultem 1000P and P84 were used as a tougheners for bismaleimide matrix. Mechanical properties of modified matrixes and corresponding carbon fiber reinforced plastics were investigated. Influence of the tougheners amount on the mechanical properties of the matrixes was explored. All of the Siltem-modified samples displayed increasing of KIC values over that of the neat BMI resin. The higher Siltem content correspond to the greater improvement in fracture characteristics. However, when the Siltem content is above 10 wt %, the further toughening effect appears to be negligible meanwhile flexural and tensile strength are significantly decreased. All of the Ultem1000P-modified samples displayed linear increasing of KIC values at higher Ultem content over that of the neat BMI resin without deterioration of tensile and flexural strength. Addition of the polyimide P84 also provided the increasing of fracture properties without deterioration of the tensile properties however increasing of fracture properties are not significant. The addition of thermoplastic particles did not effect on the Tg of BMI blends. Mechanical properties of CFRP basis on corresponding polymer matrix is in good accordance with neat matrixes properties.
