Mechanisms of the charge exchange reaction dp-> (pp)_s N pi, where (pp)_s is the two proton system at low excitation energy E_pp< 3 MeV , are studied at beam energies 1-2 GeV, where the invariant mass M_X of the final N pi system corresponds to formation of the Delta (1232) isobar. It is shown that the direct mechanism of this reaction, where the initial proton is excited into the Delta-isobar, dominates and allows one to explain the ecxisting data on the unpolarised differential cross section for M_X > 1.2 GeV/c ^2 and the spherical tensor analyzing power T22. However, his model fails to describe T20.
