In this work, vibrational distribution function of hydrogen molecules in the ground state are probed by laser photodetachment and UV-visible optical emission spectroscopy. The vibrationally excited hydrogen molecules are formed by recombinative desorption of atomic hydrogen on the surface of selected materials and converted into negative ions H- by dissociative attachment of low energy electrons. Different materials and surface temperatures are investigated, and their influence on the density of the negative ions and vibrational distribution function of the hydrogen molecules are studied.
