While studying Egyptian proverbs (and syntax of Egyptian Arabic in general) some questions arise about syntax and pragmatics of utterances the first part of which may be represented by a clause (subject + predicate) (1) or a noun phrase (a word combination (2) or a single word (3)) and the second part – by a subordinate clause which is connected with the first part by w(i)- conjunction. In the present research we try to identify the type of syntactic structure that those clauses represent: whether it is a circumstantial clause or a clause of another syntactic type.
