During two seasons in 2022 and 2023 the Stavropol expedition of the Department of Archaeology of the Faculty of History of Lomonosov Moscow State University has completely explored mound No. 1 of the Novozavedennoye-V burial ground in the Georgievsky district of the Stavropol Region. The monument is located near floodplain of the Kuma river, on the natural border of the steppe zone and the foothill basin. During the excavations, 30 burials has been discovered, dating back to various eras – i.e. from the Middle Bronze Age to the New Times. A notable group of this burials is formed of Sarmatian graves dated by the 2nd – 1st centuries BC. Among them, three elite burials (Nos. 7, 15, 30) stand out, i.e. catacombs digged into the natural ground nearby to each other under the eastern slope of embankment. Catacombs Nos. 7, 30 contained the burials of noble warriors with attributes of power – i.e. golden torques, gold and silver cups, iron staff-scepter and iron tripod. There is a certain similarity in the funeral rites of these burials, suggesting that the deceased were some relatives. These burials contained also items of oriental import, concretely in the burial No. 30 there was iron plate armor, while in the burial No. 7 – a set of belt and sword belt buckles made of silver and gold. The armor, composed of large rectangular plates, has parallels in the antiquities of Central Asia – i.e. the armor from Chirik-Rabat, the armor on the sculptural frieze from Khalchayan and in the relief on the flask from Khumbuz-Tepe. The Novozavedensky armor is also similar to the armor from the elite complexes of the Sargat culture of Western Siberia (i.e. the Sidorovsky and the Isakovsky burial grounds) and from the Kalinovsky burial ground in the Volga region. Probably all this panoply runs back to the Chinese prototypes of the the Zhanguo (the Warring States) period. The Novozavedensky armor was combined with an iron helmet of the Celto-Italic type, with a dagger of the Prokhorov Sarmatian type and with a sword with a straight narrow crosshair and a rare volute-shaped pommel similar to the daggers from the Temple of Oxus and from the materials of the Tulkharian burial ground. Silver (?) gilded rectangular overlays on paired buckles from a wide outer belt, decorated with zoomorphic images, may be confidently be attributed to Ordos type buckles. These are probably Chinese-made products, decorated in the “animal style” with a view to the tastes of nomads; such products are often attributed to the circle of the Xiongnu art. Pair of sword belt buckles made in cast gold (inlaid with polychrome inserts) with scenes of a mountain goat being tormented by a feline predator is an example of toreutics in the manner of the Siberian collection of Peter I, i.e. the work of Chinese or Central Asian jewelers. The gold belt plate combined with them represents the image of a syncretic predator.
