In Russian society, attitudes towards agricultural education as a way to increase the efficiency of agricultural production have changed since the 18th century. The development of primary agricultural education in the Russian Empire of the 19th century was hampered by the low literacy level of peasants. Public initiative and charity of private individuals were of decisive importance in the emergence of the first agricultural schools.
