As a result of the Great Greek colonization from the 7 century BC the Greeks actively mastered the Black Sea coast, founding everywhere their colonies. Northern Black Sea region became a meeting of two great civilizations – Greek and Scythian. The relationship between the Scythians and Greeks were different – sometimes peaceful, sometimes hostile. In any case, we know from written sources and archaeological evidence of the existence of trade, in which both sides were very interested and involved. How functioned this trade, how deeply the Greek merchants penetrated in Scythia, if the Scythians themselves appeared in the Greek trade centers, what the Scythians bought and what they delivered to the Greeks – all these questions are far from being resolved. One of the starting points of the solution of these problems is to define the directions of trade routes, conditions of travel of Greek merchants, the trade routes of the Scythians. Since the most rivers of the Northern Black Sea region flow in meridional direction and have a powerful current, the trade routes from the west to the east should be significantly hampered, and the trade was mainly along the rivers. Ancient authors report on the number of travel days by rivers from their source to an unknown location; it allows to calculate the depth of penetration of Greek merchants. There is also evidence of the existence of trade routes to the north-east of Eastern Europe up to the Ural mountains, apparently through the Don and the Volga, and of the Northern Caspian part of the Great Silk Road. Archaeological data also let to determine the nomenclature of goods purchased by the Scythians. The report is expected on the basis of literary, archaeological, and climatic-geographical data to reconstruct the Northern Black Sea trade routes.
