We explore the concept of ciphers of transcendence, introduced by Karl Jaspers, and how it is reflected in Irish philosophical thought, in the book Ciphers of Transcendence: Essays in Honour of Patrick A. Masterson, edited by Fran O’Rourke. We claim that ciphers of transcendence are ways of expressing and understanding the reality that transcends and pervades the world and that they are relevant and important for the study in the sphere of humanities. We analyze the different types of ciphers of transcendence, and their significance for the philosophical quest for meaning and value of life. The study is based on the works of Karl Jaspers and other sources, it also uses the book Ciphers of Transcendence as the source to examine how Irish philosophers apply the concept of ciphers of transcendence to various aspects of Irish philosophical thought. The report concludes that Jaspers’ concept of ciphers of transcendence is reflected in Irish philosophical thought, and that it contributes to the understanding of the role of transcendence in shaping dialogue between peoples.
