Identification and support of talented students is an important feature of the Russian federal government's education policy. For these purposes, the state system of school Olympiads (intellectual competitions) is maintained. This system includes 4 stages of the All-Russian Olympiad, from school to federal level, as well as training and selection system for the national team on the international Olympiad. We are presenting the major principles of the organization of the national Olympiad in Astronomy in Russia and share experience in the preparation of the national team.
