In the report the first examples of a synthesis of pyrazine phosphonates from the readily available diethylphosphite and corresponding pyrazine-2,3-dicarbonitriles via C–CN bond cleavage followed by C–P coupling have been demonstrated. It was showed that this transformation proceeds smoothly under both Hirao procedure using Pd-catalyst and in non-catalytic conditions in the presence of a strong base.
