A one-pot polyaniline synthesis at the presence of exfoliated graphite platelets of graphite and graphene grade results in a composite material PANI-graphene and PANI-graphite. Cyclic voltammetry with the use of ruthenium couple at pH 9.5 and iron couple at pH 7.8 has shown that the composite materials are electroactive in contrast to PANI prepared without the use of graphene/graphite. This indicates that graphene/graphite platelets are uniformly distributed within PANI matrix to give a conducting network. According to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis of the material, one PANI repeating unit consisting of four benzene rings is entangled to six carbon atoms of graphene. The properties of the composite such as solubility are mostly determined by PANI and the FTIR and Raman spectra are dominated by the conducting polymer bands. This composite material is readily dispersible in N-methylpyrrolidone and can be used as an electrode material for fabrication a solid contact for ion-selective electrodes or reactive substance for the detection of biological molecules. The incorporation of graphene or graphite platelets in the composite material improves the pH stability of the composite material and enhances 3 times the current response on voltammetric detection of the ascorbic acid.
