Ordered binary intermetallics of d-block – p-block elements represent rather interesting objects from both fundamental point of view and application-wise. Even more interesting are low-dimensional structures built from various fragments of such intermetallics. Of many intermetallic motifs, a Cu3Au structure type and its derivatives are among the most prominently featured. By “diluting” an intermetallic motif, which we chose to be platinum-indium or palladium-indium binaries, by typical p-block non-metals such as pnictogens or chalcogens, we have obtained a number of structures belonging to various structure types but still retaining cuboctahedral fragments of their parent intermetallics. Several of the ternary phases we discovered belong to the Pd5TlAs structure type, others represent new structure types featuring different arrangements of intermetallic fragments.
