The human body, brain, blood, organs consist of a huge number of microscopic particles. Manifestations of life processes are a macroscopic result of their interactions. Science has accumulated a vast amount of knowledge on both micro and macro levels. The quantitative analysis of these big data for understanding the laws of the functioning of complex systems can be carried out only on the basis of mathematical modeling. This term can be briefly expressed in words: "model - algorithm - program", or wheel of computational experiment. On the example of a simple and clear, but far from trivial, model of hard sphere gas, we will try to show the main stages in constructing the mathematical formalization of such a physical system. This methodology is developed by many scientists, in particular, in the biological and sociological contexts. We are considering a set of about 10 to the power of 25 solid balls that just fly and collide. A mathematical description of the evolution of such a system inevitably leads to the necessity of using the apparatus of the theory of random processes. To identify the mathematical and computational features of the problem under study it is important to write it in a dimensionless form. This procedure leads to the appearance of the Knudsen number, the physical meaning of which is the ratio of the mean free path of molecules to the characteristic size of the problem. The hierarchy of micro-macro models is constructed in accordance with the change in this parameter from values of the order of unity (micro) to magnitudes of the order of 0.1 (meso) and further to 0.01 (macro). Accurate movement along this path leads to more accurate, in comparison with traditional, mathematical models, which affects their greater computational fitness - nature pays for a careful attitude towards it. In particular, macroscopic equations are obtained softer for calculations than the classical Navier-Stokes equations. This hierarchy of mathematical statements generates a corresponding chain of computational methods. Microscopic problems are most often solved using Monte Carlo methods, although there are groups that are committed to nonrandom methods for solving the Boltzmann equation. Recently, much attention has been paid to meso models based on modeling the Brownian motion or solving the deterministic Fokker - Planck - Kolmogorov equations. To solve the problems of a continuous medium, different approaches are used: difference methods, finite element methods, and particle methods. Проявления жизненных процессов являются макроскопическим результатом их взаимодействий. Наука накопила колоссальный объём знаний и на микро, и на макро уровнях. Количественный анализ этих больших данных для понимания законов функционирования сложных систем может быть проведён только на основе математического моделирования. Этот термин кратко можно выразить словами: «модель – алгоритм - программа», или колесо вычислительного эксперимента. На примере простой и ясной, но далеко не тривиальной, модели газа из твёрдых сфер мы постараемся показать основные этапы построения математической формализации такой физической системы. Эта методология развивается многими учёными, в частности, в биологическом и социологическом контекстах. Мы рассматриваем набор из порядка 10 в степени 25 твёрдых шаров, которые лишь только летают и сталкиваются. Математическое описание эволюции такой системы с неизбежностью приводит к необходимости использования аппарата теории случайных процессов. Для выявления математических и вычислительных особенностей исследуемой задачи важно записать её в безразмерном виде. Эта процедура приводит к появлению числа Кнудсена, физическим смыслом которого является отношение средней длины свободного пробега молекул к характерному размеру задачи. Иерархия микро – макро моделей строится в соответствии с изменением этого параметра от величин порядка единицы (микро) к величинам порядка 0,1 (мезо) и далее - к 0,01 (макро). Аккуратное движение по этому пути приводит к более точным, по сравнению с традиционными, математическим моделям, что сказывается на их большей вычислительной пригодности – природа платит за бережное к ней отношение. В частности, макроскопические уравнения получаются более мягкими для расчётов, чем классические уравнения Навье – Стокса. Эта иерархия математических постановок порождает соответствующую цепочку вычислительных методов. Микроскопические задачи чаще всего решают с помощью методов Монте – Карло, хотя есть группы, приверженные неслучайным методам решения уравнения Больцмана. Последнее время много внимания уделяется мезо – моделям на основе моделирования броуновского движения или решения детерминистических уравнений Фоккера – Планка – Колмогорова. Для решения задач сплошной среды используются различные подходы: разностные методы, методы конечных элементов, а также методы частиц. Последние, на наш взгляд, особенно перспективны для всей иерархии, объединяя разные постановки единой вычислительной идеологией.
