Understanding the neuronal basis of disorders of consciousness can help improve their diagnosis, indicate targets for therapy and reveal the organization of normal conscious information processing. We here aimed at finding the aspects of fMRI-based functional connectivity differentiating the vegetative state/unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS) and the minimally conscious state (MCS) from each other and from the normal condition. 22 patients were studied, showing reduced connectivity and disrupted patterns of relative connection strengths, with abnormal patterns of strong positive correlations. The results suggest that certain strong functional correlations may be important for consciousness.
