The search and development for alternative "green" technologies for obtaining materials with predetermined properties is one of the most important trends in modern scientific research. Sulfur-containing substances form the basis of many sub-branches of the chemical industry. But their receipt is often associated with processes that have a negative impact on the environment. At the moment, sulfur is produced at oil and gas plants as a by-product and accumulates in dumps. Therefore, there are being developed ways of using elemental sulfur which should solve the problems of economic efficiency and ecological safety of storage and processing of elemental sulfur. Two areas of research can be distinguished: the transformation of conventional crystalline sulfur into specific varieties (e.g., amorphous, water-soluble, organomodified), and the production of organic substances with a high sulfur content (sulphurated organic products, sulfur-containing polymers (thiokols), organic polysulfides).
